International railway connection at Imatra - Svetogorsk is very much needed

According to a survey, different factors support development of International railway connection at Imatra - Svetogorsk. Public opinion, growing industrial cargo, traffic jams and security, forecast for traffic volumes, ecology and many other reasons show, the railway connection between Imatra and Svetogorsk needs development and investments.

The Regional Council of South Carelia has created a plan, how to develop the railway connection at Imatra - Svetogorsk. In the plan, both cargo and passanger trains could use Imatra - Svetogrosk border crossing point.

Russia and Finland have heavily invested in railways on the same area on the both sides of the border, but the connection between two good railway networks is poor and modestly utilized.

Director of the Regional Council of South Carelia Matti Viialaisen says, this is the most important project of the regional development for South Carelia.

– The goal is to make an electrified triangle rail on Finnish side, and electrify the Svetogrosk - Kamennogorsk railway, Viialainen says.

The road map and pre feasibility studies from point of views of Russia and Finland are attached.
